ATHENA AVIATION presented and moderated an executive panel at the Airline Business Alliances, Joint Ventures and Partnerships Conference in Madrid.

"TO BE OR NOT TO BE... In an Alliance"

Shakeel Adam compared and contrasted the various models for cooperation available to airlines, looking in particular at how airlines ensure they gain the key benefits from their co-operation.

  • Comparing co-operation vs. alliance membership
  • Alliances: where does the value come from?
  • Dispelling the myths of alliances
  • You’re now a full member. Now what?

Key issues addressed in this discussed focused on

  • the need for existing members to revisit their business case and ensure they are taking action to continuously improve and benefit from the alliance;
  • the need for new members to actively participate in the alliance to ensure they are an actively player both contributing and benefiting from the group; and
  • for new prospects to carefully and diligently assess their options of alliances vs. remaining independant

"Effectively using co-operation agreements to gain entry into new markets"

Sudeep Ghai moderated an executive panel consisting of Delta Airlines, Kenya Airways, S7 Airlines, VRG Linhaes - Gruppo Gol and Kingfisher Airlines to review how their cooperation allows cross-benefits.

  • A look at China, India, South America & the Middle East
  • Can LCCs and FSAs work together?
  • Overcoming the cultural challenges
  • Alliances as a means of optimising revenue

Key issues raised in this discussion included the need for older members of the aliances to provide greater support and guidance for smaller and newer members in order to strengthen the alliance as a whole, as well as the need for emerging market carriers to take a more active role at not only opening their markets, but also at taking advantage of the wider networks available to them and their passengers.
