Sudeep Ghai of ATHENA AVIATION moderated ancillary revenue and distribution panels at the World LCC Congress in London.
Given that 2009 global ancillary revenues jumped 43% on the previous year to $13 billion with United, American, Delta, Qantas and Ryanair among the top earners, full service airlines have clearly found there is money in unbundling. The panel Sudeep moderated focused on chasing the money: where will the next ancillary revenue idea will come from, how do you stop ancillary revenues from being viewed as punitive, should one go a la carte or bundle, how can airlines work with third parties to drive revenue and what can you do to drive conversion in the booking process itself. When the airlines who do this well can average 20% of their revenue through ancillaries, this is an area management simply have to take note of.
The marketing and distribution platform panel took a longer view on changes to distribution platforms and technology. What role for instance can emerging as well as internet technologies play in raising revenue and yield.
